Galentine’s Day Explained

Galentine’s Day was created in 2010 by the character Leslie Knope on the television series Parks & Rec. The word Galentine combines “Gal” and “Valentine” and is celebrated on February 13th, or “Valentine’s Day Eve.” The purpose of the day is to celebrate platonic friendships, usually among women, and can involve getting together and exchanging small gifts, and having brunch (especially involving waffles, Leslie Knope’s favorite!) If you’re thinking of planning a fun day for your gal pals, here are some easy inspirations to help you and your friends make this year’s G-Day sweeter than ever.

“Every February 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”

- Leslie Knope, Park & Rec
