The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla marks the first in the 21st century, and the only one most of us have had the chance to view in our lifetimes!
Upon the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September of 2022, her eldest son, Charles III, and his wife, Camilla, ascended to the British throne. And even though Charles and Camilla have already begun their reign as King and Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, there’s still one more thing that needs to happen for their transition to the throne to be complete: their coronation.
Details of the Upcoming Coronation
On Saturday, May 6th, 2023, King Charles and Queen Camilla’s coronation will take place at Westminster Abbey in London. The coronation of the United Kingdom’s monarch is a grand, lavish ceremony that celebrates their new rule.
At the ceremony, the monarch is given their crown and other objects of regalia, like emblems and symbols. Receiving a crown and other objects of regalia is what happens during the investiture stage of the service. You can learn about the service’s other stages here. King Charles will be crowned with the St. Edward's Crown, which has been traditionally used in past coronations, and Queen Camilla will be crowned with Queen Mary’s 1911 coronation crown.
King Charles III’s official coronation logo design is inspired by King Charles’ love of the planet, nature and deep concern for the natural world.
The Coronation Concert
On the day after the coronation, Sunday, May 7th, 2023, the BBC will stage and broadcast a special, live Coronation Concert from Windsor Castle. At the concert, global music stars will perform, and there will be spoken-word performances as well.
Like the coronation ceremony, the concert will also be televised. As its date draws closer, be sure to check your local providers to see where and when you can watch it.
