Walkers Scottish Thistle Icon Tin

The Scottish Thistle Flower is said to be the oldest national flower on record. The legend of how this regal plant became Scotland’s national emblem goes back many hundreds of years to the summer of 1263.

In hopes to regain the land and conquer the Scots, King Haakon of Norway set off with a sizeable fleet of longships for the Scottish coast. Fierce storms forced the ships onto the beach at Largs in Ayrshire, about 33 miles west of Glasgow.  The Norsemen removed their footwear so they could move more stealthily at night to surprise the sleeping Scottish Clansmen.

As the Norsemen crept barefoot, they came across an area of ground covered in thistles. One of Haakon’s men shrieked out in pain, alerting the Clansmen to the advancing Norsemen – thus saving Scotland from invasion. The Scottish Thistle holds its meaning to this day as an iconic national emblem of Scotland.

Walkers Scottish Cow Icon Tin

Ah, the Scottish Highlands. Home to Walkers Shortbread with its magnificent landscapes and one of the most iconic Scottish animals – the Highland Cow. Highland cattle fostered an alliance with the Scottish people long ago and remain iconic symbols of the country today.

The Highland Cow is perfectly adapted to the harsh climate, strong winds, and heavy rainfall of the landscapes in Scotland. These shaggy, noble, larger-than-life beasts can be found grazing anywhere from the misty moors to the farms across the country. Once referred to as Bò Ghàidhealach in Gaelic, and as the Heilan coo in Scots, they are now quite simply called the Highland Coo.

Walkers collectable tin stands as a tribute to these gentle giants who brightened many a day in the Scottish Highlands with their beauty, grace, and resilience.
